International students and mental health

Students often struggle with their mental health due to being away from home and adjusting to a more independent adult life. Studying abroad can add to the issues that lead to poor mental health.

Common reasons for mental health issues in international students

  • Less access to family and close friends
  • Living in a country with a different culture and way of life
  • Language skills may be excellent but social situations may be trickier to understand and forming friendships may be difficult
  • Family may have paid a significant fee for your course and accommodation and with that often comes high expectations
  • It may be hard to know how to seek help and there may be a concern that you won't be able to express your feelings fully.

Supporting international students

Universities and colleges often provide support for their students, however many students do not feel comfortable asking their university for help. Sessions may also be limited and even when help is sought, you may feel that you need to continue past what is available for free from your institution. If you need to talk, we can help.
