Frequently asked questions about seeing a counsellor, psychologist or therapist
There are a number of questions we are often asked by new clients about how we do things. In this section we have tried to answer some of the most common questions below. Please feel free to contact Ewan Gillon if what you want to know isn't here.
What happens during an initial session?
The session lasts 50 minutes to 1 hour, and we use the time to talk through what you want from therapy or coaching and how best you may achieve this. It also gives you the chance to ask your practitioner any questions about themselves and how they work. At the end of the session your practitioner will make some suggestions for you to consider, in terms of what they think may be the best way for you to meet your goals, within the Centre or elsewhere. You and your practitioner may, at this point, agree to work together, and if so you will discuss a bit about the 'contract'. You may also decide to have some time to think, or your practitioner may suggest other options.
Do you require clients to lie on a couch?
No, we sit face to face on two comfortable chairs in a relaxed and confidential setting. We also offer clients tea and coffee to help him/her feel at home.
I am not sure if my problem is bad enough to justify coming to see you?
There is no objective measure of 'good' or 'bad' in terms of people's problems. What actually counts is how something makes you feel. If you feel bad, for whatever reason, then that is what matters to us.
Could I come fortnightly or less regularly if I want to ?
We are happy to see people in whatever way suits them, although we generally prefer for new clients to come regularly to start with. In some occasional instances we may not feel able to offer you a pattern of working that you wish.
When can you see a new client?
We generally try to set up an initial session within a week or two, although this does depend on the practitioner and the client both being able to be in the same place at the same time. The more flexible a client is, the more likely we will be able to see him/her soon. We can usually set up an emergency initial appointment very quickly if needs be.
How do I pay and is it awkward?
Generally, self funding clients are asked to pay for each session at the end. Normally we will just ask you how you are planning to pay and then give you an invoice/receipt to settle up.
How do I get psychological therapy or counselling funded through my insurance policy?
If you are an insurance-funded client, there are some basic steps you need to take to get psychological therapy or counselling through your policy.
