EMDR (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing) for trauma

What is EMDR?

EMDR is a therapy based around the idea that when we dream during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep we process our feelings about painful things we have encountered. It is this processing that allows us to gradually get over upsetting events. It is also why we often dream about things we feel strongly about. EMDR is designed to replicate the REM process by asking us to move our eyes from side to side (normally following a moving stimuli). At the same time, we will be asked to think about the event or events that have upset us (or versions of these if thinking about the actual event is too difficult). This helps us come to terms with upsetting memories. It is not a talking therapy, so there is no pressure to say what the memory is (although sometimes people choose to).

What is EMDR used for?

EMDR is mainly used to help us come to terms with things we have experienced that have traumatised us in some way, such as a road accident, a physical violation or the loss of a loved one. It is most commonly used for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but increasingly used to address problems such as anxiety, addictions, OCD, grief and anger.

Does EMDR work?

EMDR has a very impressive evidence base for trauma-related problems such as PTSD and phobias, and has been shown to be very effective with a range of client populations and problems. However, like any therapy, it doesn't work for everyone and part of the therapist's job in any initial meeting will be to explore their client's particular difficulties and determine if EMDR is the best approach. EMDR is also often used in combination with other psychological approaches, so on occasion it may not be used straight away, but gradually utilised once trust has been established between client and psychologist. This is something that would always be discussed and agreed.
