Counselling

What Is counselling?

Counselling is a process that involves talking about issues or problems that are causing you distress. It involves spending time exploring specific difficulties, such as low-mood or anxiety, to understand why you are feeling like this and what might help make things better. It is generally focused on specific topics that are affecting you at the moment, and is a supportive process designed to make you feel in control.

Is relationship/couples counselling different?

Relationships/couples counselling is similar, but takes place with more than one person and is focused specifically on the relationship. To find out more about relationships / couples counselling click here.

How does counselling work?

Counselling involves speaking about your concerns with an experienced practitioner, who will help you clarify what you feel and why, and explore possible ways of making thing better. It is the process of talking to someone else, whom you don't know and is thus impartial, that allows you the freedom to explore how you really feel and what you really want. It is this that provides the time and support to examine what changes you may wish to make to improve things.

Why do people seek counselling?

People seek counselling for a range of reasons such as low-mood, anxiety/panic, anger, behavioural issues, addictions, grief, eating distress, health worries, and uncertainty. The list is long!

Is counselling effective?

Counselling has been shown by many research studies to be an effective way of making things better. Indeed, recent meta-analyses (aggregated results of many studies) have demonstrated that counselling is as effective as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) for many problems including low mood.
